Located in Tāneatua, the gateway to the Urewera, Tāneatua School sits on Tūhoe land, nestled between the coastal hills and Te Awahou and Ohinemataroa rivers. The School provides dual-medium education for children from Whakatane to Waimana and the Ruatoki Valley. Nga tāngata o Tāneatua whakapapa to the Tipuna Tūhoe and the marae in close proximity to the school – Otarahioi. We are proudly Tūhoe and we live and learn through Tūhoe kaupapa and tikanga.

Our current motto – Tāneatua He Ariki, He Tohunga, He Tangata, He Uruuru Mātauranga – expresses the drive within our Board, our Staff, and our community to re-establish and revitalise Te Reo me ōna tikanga at Te Kura ō Tāneatua.

Rumaki - Maori Medium

Our Rumaki unit has two multi-level classes, year 0-3 and year 4-8 following Te Marautanga o Aotearoa and our commitment is to the rejuvenation and sustainability of Te Reo in our community and beyond. Our ākonga are taught at Level 1 Immersion – with 81%-100% of their learning delivered in Te Reo. Our structured learning – te reo kōrero, pānui, tuhituhi and pāngarau – is based on hands-on, practical learning contexts drawn from Te Ao Māori. Like other Tūhoe schools in our area, we have a strong focus on Hāhii-Ringatū in the morning to set us up for learning throughout the day.

Auraki - English Medium

We have 6 English medium (Auraki) classes catering for tamariki in years 0-8. These are composite classes, usually made up of two year levels (for example – Year 0 and 1 or Year 5 and 6), however on occasion the composition of classes varies, depending on our roll. We teach the New Zealand Curriculum and structured literacy and numeracy programmes are a key part of our daily programmes, often including some elements being delivered through play-based (in the juniors) and project-based (in years 5-8) learning experiences. Like our Rumaki akonga, Hahii-Ringatu is an integral part of the start of our day.
